Trace a custom candidate

Enter the two sources and any spelling you want to inspect. The checker finds one possible pair of visible, contiguous source fragments. It does not send the text to Ship Name Lab.

What the checker actually measures

The checker searches the candidate spelling for contiguous fragments that also occur in source A and source B. It selects a pair that covers as much of the candidate as possible, favors a meaningful fragment from the weaker source, and permits at most one shared boundary character. Source order can reverse. This is a deterministic character comparison, not an AI judgment.

“Draft coverage” is the share of candidate characters covered by the two selected traces. “Contribution balance” compares the lengths of those two visible fragments. Neither percentage predicts whether people will recognize, pronounce, prefer, or adopt the name.

Taylor + Travis can be traced as Tay + vis. The spelling is fully covered and the selected fragment lengths are balanced. A person still needs to determine whether both sources are recognizable without being shown the answer.

Shared boundary

Brangelina

Brad + Angelina can be traced with Bra and Angelina sharing the boundary “a.” The second source visibly dominates, but established public familiarity—not the checker—is what makes the label recognizable.

Structure is not recognition

Aledan

Alex + Jordan has a clean Ale + dan trace. Yet an unfamiliar reader may not recover Jordan from “dan.” Visible structure can explain a draft without proving that the draft communicates well.

Use it after editing

  1. Generate several candidates or write your own.
  2. Change the spelling until it looks easier to read.
  3. Check whether the edit still leaves a visible trace from both sources.
  4. Show the draft alone to another person and ask for pronunciation and source guesses before explaining it.
  5. Search the exact term with the relevant fandom, event, couple, or project before public use.

Do not use it as clearance

The checker does not consult dictionaries, trademark records, usernames, domains, fandom tags, demographic data, or language-specific pronunciation models. It cannot determine consent, cultural suitability, identity, meaning, ownership, or whether a community already prefers another label.
